With the hustle and bustle of everyone returning to the hectic schedule of school, what appeared to be the last warm weekend of 2014 seemed to be slipping away. In the spirit of the returning autumn, I researched vegan friendly wines and came across a local winery bearing the name Quattro Goomba. And for that main reason, I decided to head a bit down a few roads to explore this winery that has many of its inspirations from Italy.
A hint of autumn was in the air, making the warm sunshine on the hills of Quattro Goomba overlooking picturesque countryside welcoming. Quattro Goomba is a pet friendly winery that has several seating areas that afford somewhat of a private feeling for each group that attends, but it also has areas for crowd lovers.
According to the head winemaker at Quattro Goomba, fining agents are rarely used consisting only of bentonite, a vegan friendly fining agent. Regarding their wines, I personally tasted and purchased a bottle of their Piney River Red 2012, a red blend with Virginia grapes varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Tannat.
Piney River Red 2012 is a red blend with apparent hints of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is a youthful, medium dark wine, with a slight haze and a hue resembling garnet. The wine has moderate aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, peppercorn, distinct black fruits, and earthy aromas. The wine is medium sweet, with a medium body and tart, and medium level round tannins. Piney River Red is unbalanced with excess tannins and sugars, as well as noticeable legs. In regards to flavor, it has a flavorful intensity with noticeable hints of black pepper, cherries, strawberries, bark, bubblegum, and dark plum. The wine also has a long finish, lasting about 5 to 8 seconds. Lastly, this wine has a metallic aftertaste flavor, potentially associated with brettanomyces.
Overall, Piney River Red was a good wine red blend with lots of potential for future vintages. The 2012 Piney River Red wine was a perfect start to the autumn season. I will make sure to keep visiting Quattro Goomba and enjoy the Virginia landscapes.
Until the next bottle!
